ALONE. AFRAID. ABANDONED.
These three words form Marsel Winters’ dominant depiction of herself and the world that surrounds her following her mother Graceanne’s recent death. Grieving and fighting depression, she takes a leave of absence from work and travels from San Antonio to nearby Dallas to attend an inspirational book signing event for Michelle Obama. While there, Marsel meets a much older woman named Bernice Stone who says "you look like my peoples" to her and further declares that they must be distant relatives. An ancestry DNA test soon confirms this fact, and Marsel's journey begins as Bernice shares the secret history of her long-lost family. Marsel is shocked as she discovers an amazing ancestral past and legacy that includes the Creole slave ship rebellion and the Jim Crow era when many African Americans migrated North to escape the racist Ku Klux Klan who still maintained a violent stranglehold on the South.
